Topic Edsets and ScalaRider Bluetooth...
I have the 2G in my AGV Miglia modular and love it! I just purchased a Cardo ScalaRider Bluetooth headset and was wondering if Ed or anyone has replaced the ScalaRider speaker and boom mic with the Edsets speaker and mic?

I'm thinking I can just wire the ScalaRider unit in parallel with the Edset speaker and mic in the helmet and it would work along with the GL1800 audio, provided all the impedances match up.

It works file with the extra speaker in the helmet but I'm sure I could hear it better in that Edset speaker and using the Edset mic imbedded in the helmet sure beats that little boom mic sticking up in there.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Don,

The ScalaRider is not a high fidelity unit, and our speaker requires a bit more power than the ScalaRider can provide, most likely. The Scala mic is a condenser mic most likely, and the Goldwing is not compatible with condenser mics since it lacks the DC bias the mics need. Wiring one headset on top of another one would be a disaster at best. Impedance is not the problem, it's distortion caused by mismatched power outputs, and ground loops, that sort of thing.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, exactly, however, can you be VERY specific about this? It sounds like you want to hear the Scala audio at the same time you're connected to the Wing, in which case, I'd wire the scala speaker to the AUX input on the bike. You would need a mic signal back to the Scala to talk out on it, but that's not going to be simple because the two use different mic technology.

If you want Bluetooth for your phone, I recommend using either a bluetooth GPS from Garmin and one of our mic splitters, or get a bluetooth adapter for your Wing, and just pair your phone with the Wing and the headset will take care of the rest.

Trying to add two headsets into the wing is not going to lead you to happiness, I think.

Thanks Ed.

That's what I figured. I have your G2 system in my flip front helmet and added the Scala Rider to it. The volume on the Scala speaker is plenty loud enough to drive your speaker as I have it mounted right below your speaker in the helmet, basically aimed at the bottom of my earlobe. It can be heard but not as well as it would be if it fired directly in my ear like yours do. I considered the condenser vs. dynamic mic issues as well.

There's not much room for the little Scala boom mic between my mouth and the chin bar on the AGV Miglia as it sits very close to my face. I have your mic flush mounted in the foam of the chinbar and it works very well with the GL intercom. I guess I could live with the boom mic being there but would like to hear the Scala audio better. I thought of going with Kennedy to integrate the phone with the wing but wanted to try this first. I still might try wiring the Scala in parallel with the Edset just to see what happens. Since the Scala is a helmet mounted internally powered stand alone unit and not electrically or physically connected to the bike I don't think I'd have any ground loop issues. It's just a helmet mounted Bluetooth with a single speaker and mic.

I'll let you know the results if/when I try it. I also have an issue with my G2 dongle which is about a year old. There's an intermittant in the right speaker wiring somewhere. If I move my head just right or wiggle the dongle it cuts in and out. 99% of the time it's fine, which is why I haven't gotten with you about replacing it. In the summer I'm using an open face helmet without a headset so it's not top of mind. I'll get with you on the dongle issue separately.

Thanks again,

Don
